FAQs

The cost of a CCTV system varies depending on various factors, including the number of cameras, the type of cameras, the complexity of installation, and whether you need additional services such as remote viewing or cloud storage. We recommend you contact us directly at Clear Sound Fire & Security for an accurate quote. As expert CCTV installers in Coventry and across the West Midlands, we can provide a competitive quote for your CCTV camera systems.

Generally, you do not need council permission to install CCTV cameras on your own property as long as the cameras are less than 75cm x 25cm x 25cm in size and are positioned more than 2.5m from the ground. However, checking with your local council or a professional installer is always a good idea to ensure you comply with all relevant regulations and privacy laws.

Absolutely! Installing CCTV on your property provides an extra layer of security and peace of mind. It can deter potential intruders, provide valuable evidence in case of a security breach, and may even lower your home insurance premiums. Moreover, with technological advancements, home CCTV systems have become more affordable and easier to operate, offering features such as remote viewing on your smartphone. At Clear Sound Fire & Security, we provide a range of security systems suitable for every home and budget.

In short, not just anyone can view CCTV footage. Access is limited to authorised staff, law enforcement, and individuals with a legitimate reason, all within the framework of privacy laws and organisational policies. Unauthorised viewing or sharing of footage is generally prohibited and may be subject to legal penalties.

The best surveillance cameras for your home depend on your specific property and security objectives. For most regular homeowners, we recommend turret or dome cameras, specifically those with 4K UHD resolution and integrated Infrared (IR) illuminators for clear night vision. If your property is prone to tampering, our vandal-resistant range has been rigorously tested to withstand significant impact.

As well as providing recommendations based on the needs of your household, our specialist surveyors will also ensure that your cameras are positioned in the right areas to capture essential footage, and install a system that adheres to BS EN 62676, the standard for all video surveillance systems used in security applications.

This level of detail is essential for making sure your CCTV setup meets your insurance requirements and that recordings are fit for purpose if they need to be viewed by the police or your insurance company.

If your cameras are only capturing images within the boundary of your own private property, you are generally covered under the ‘household exemption’ and are not legally required to put up a sign stating that CCTV is in operation. However, if your cameras overlook a public space, such as the pavement, street, or a neighbour’s garden, you must comply with the requirements set out in the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

This includes displaying visible signage to inform people they are being recorded and ensuring that you store all footage securely. Even in cases where signs are not strictly required, we recommend using them as they serve as a powerful visual deterrent, warning potential intruders that your home is fully protected by a professional CCTV system.

Yes. While many standard smart cameras rely on a Wi-Fi connection, our professional-grade systems use a hard-wired IP or analogue setup. These CCTV systems record directly to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) or Digital Video Recorder (DVR) located securely inside your home. In most cases, you will only need an internet connection if you wish to use our remote viewing app to see live footage on your smart device while you are away from your property. Wired CCTV is generally more reliable than wireless systems, as they aren’t susceptible to interference or signal drops.

Many of our video surveillance cameras can record audio, but this is a feature that must be handled with caution. Under UK privacy laws, recording private conversations without a lawful basis can be considered a breach of privacy and may lead to legal issues. If your CCTV is capable of capturing audio and you wish to use this feature, it is recommended to display clear signage as well as to ensure you store any audio recordings securely and delete them every 30 days (if they are no longer needed).

At Clear Sound Fire & Security, we primarily utilise audio in our Remotely Monitored CCTV systems. This allows an operator at our monitoring station to issue a live audio warning to an intruder, which is often enough to deter them before a crime is even committed. If you are considering using this feature for your home system, we recommend discussing this with one of our specialists to ensure your setup remains fully compliant with the law.
